“The development of a distributed generation network in Zhytomyr Oblast continues,” the official said during a session of the Zhytomyr Oblast Council.
“Last year, we added about 20 gas turbine stations to our energy capacity thanks to USAID and business support. Now, we’re set to install wind power units with a combined capacity of 250 MW, significantly ramping up renewable energy in the region.”
19 industrial and nearly 1,500 private solar plants are already operational in Zhytomyr Oblast.
Zhytomyr Oblast’s housing and utilities facilities are also switching to alternative fuels. Nearly 60% of regional heating boilers—serving homes, public institutions, and other users—have transitioned to alternative fuels.
In 2024, Ukraine added 13 large wind turbines totaling 27 MW, while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking in Berlin on June 11, 2024, pledged 1 GW of gas-fired generation by year-end and 4 GW in coming years to offset 9 GW lost to Russian attacks. The peak energy consumption in Ukraine last winter was 18 GW.
On March 7, 2025, a memorandum with a Turkish firm further signaled Zhytomyr Oblast’s wind energy ambitions, promising a major wind farm project to bolster the grid.
